Mindful Youth, since it’s inception, has focused on “at-risk youth” – those that exhibit behaviors that are problematic for themselves and others, including: aggression, violence, and illegal activities. For this group, the standard interventions of reason, punishment, or incarceration, have not resulted in them changing their problematic behaviors.
We believe mindfulness can empower these at-risk youth to recognize and manage the drives that lead them to act in unacceptable ways. They can greatly benefit from gaining skills and solutions for managing their lives. With a mindfulness practice, an individual can learn to identify their impulses before they react, thus promoting an active choice in how they respond.
It is part of Mindful Youth’s mission to provide mindfulness training to incarcerated young people in Cincinnati’s Hamilton County Youth Center. There are few local populations more challenging to approach in a group format. To make it more daunting, every individual in a pod – sometimes up to 13 young people – is required to be there. While we would have preferred that participation not be mandatory, we honored our organizational value of flexibility and embraced the opportunity. The results have been amazing! We have had, in each and every group, a majority of the participants voluntarily explore the meditation practices we are teaching.
While Mindful Youth has a primary focus upon assisting at-risk youth, this emphasis does not limit the scope of our programming. Our groups are designed to be inclusive, encompassing most young people with an identified need. In addition to our programming for youth, Mindful Youth provides training for adults who work with young people, and also for organizations. Such training emphasizes an experiential understanding of mindfulness, as well as strategies for incorporating mindfulness into unique environments.
